Winter Might Turn Out to be a Bigger Killer than the Earthquake
October 26, 2005 – 7:56 amYou are aware of the catastrophic earthquake in South Asia. Hundreds of villages in Jammu and Kashmir were destroyed. Many remote areas still await help. Casualty figures run into thousands of dead and wounded. With the advent of the bitter Himalayan winter many thousands will die if we do not help.

Provide massive aid on a war footing to prevent thousands of deaths because of cold, starvation and disease especially in remote areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
Motivate the private sector and NGOS to provide massive relief to Kashmiris just as they had provided to the victims of Gujarat earthquake a few years ago.
Undertake a well-planned rehabilitation program that includes:
In the short term: Every affected family be provided a winter tent, winter clothing, water, food and medicine.
In the mid term: Army barracks and government buildings be used for housing and for temporary schools.
In the long term: The villages be rebuilt in full compliance with anti-earthquake building codes.
